MLK MARCH 2023 AND DREAMWEEK IN SAN ANTONIO
Afro-Asian Community Archive & Museum in San Antonio
We are proud of the diversity of our city and we celebrate our diversity often. Join us in celebrating our Black community in January at some of our biggest events. San Antonio celebrates its Black heritage and contributions through the MLK March and DreamWeek. The following events will take place in January and we hope you will be able to attend:
MLK MARCH
Among the nation's largest MLK marches, the Alamo City is proud to host one of them. In January, the city's Eastside holds the MLK March as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the country's most well-known and revered civil rights leaders. A theme is determined each year by the city's MLK Commission, and members of the community are encouraged to create signs and build their attendance around that theme. It is our theme for this year to be Together, We Can Be THE Dream.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic throwing a wrench in previous years' plans, the MLK march historically attracts over 300000 people from all over the country. Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy with us on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the Alamo City.
DREAMWEEK
Whatever your interest, DreamWeek in San Antonio has something for you. The DreamWeek is meant to advance and build on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King's most iconic speeches. This year marks the 11th year of DreamWeek in San Antonio, a city-wide series of events that span almost two weeks every January. As DreamWeek began in San Antonio, it has grown exponentially over time to become an event that is shared and broadcast around the globe. At over 50 locations, over 200 events culminate to share ideas and initiate conversations about minority community challenges.
INFLUENCE OF FOOD, RACISM, HEALTH & CULTURE ON A TABLE
In what ways does food play a significant role in culture? Immeasurably significant. At At the Table: The Intersection of Food, Racism, Health & Culture, panelists Rockie Gilford, Nina Carr, and Dr. Jasmine Harris discuss food justice, health, food and land sovereignty and how it impacts the Black community. The event is free for all and is organized by Black Restaurant San Antonio.
BOAT TOUR & BLACK HISTORY DAY PARTY AT DREANWEEK
We begin the tour with light appetizers and enjoy a stroll along the River Walk, through the heart of downtown San Antonio, on a guided educational tour. Those are the things that await you at the DreamWeek Black History Day Party & Boat Tour. Here in Texas, Black Americans have a rich history and have had a great impact on the city that we know today. Tickets must be purchased in advance for the 11:30am tour.
GALLERY TALK: REPRESENTATION & IDENTITY IN PIERRE DAURAS' GOOD HENRY (1947)
Pierre Daura painted portraits of colleagues at his college during the late 1940s and early 1950s. As a result of being Black, his employer was furious when he presented these portraits to him. With this exhibition, curator Regina Palm offers visitors a glimpse into the history and symbolism of Pierre Dauras' Good Henry sculpture.
A MUSICAL BRIDGE AROUND THE OPENING RECEPTION OF THE WORLD ART GALLERY
We invite you behind-the-scenes of upcoming documentary film The Quilt: A Living History of African American Music by Musical Bridges Around the World. Coral Diaz and Noelle Artigue designed beautiful graphics from the film for the exhibition. The exhibition will be on display from January 21, 2023, until March 31, 2023, by appointment only. MBAW.org/art offers online shopping and appointment booking for the works.
DREAMWEEK: PASSION WITH PURPOSE
You can enjoy Pinkerton's BBQ, craft beer, art galleries, and live entertainment at Legacy Park for DreamWeek: Passion with Purpose. Attendees will be able to see a community-created art display depicting possible solutions to the San Antonio problem.
A WILD WEEK of ART & STORIES

Attending the MLK March or DreamWeek but unable to attend? No problem, it's the perfect time to explore the Black heritage of our city. The San Antonio African American Community Archive & San Antonio Museum (SAAACAM), located in Historic La Villita Village, has a digital archive outlining the history and contributions of African Americans. SAAACAM periodically offers Black History River Cruises, which are hour-long river barge tours through San Antonio's heart with a local host sharing the city's Black History.
