SAN ANTONIO CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH
In honor of Black History Month, San Antonio celebrates and honors its Black heritage each year. As we celebrate Black American contributions to our city and nation, from the Civil Rights Movement to modern accomplishments, it is an opportunity to recognize their accomplishments.
Every year, San Antonio celebrates Black Heritage, but it's especially great to visit some of the great sites this month! From art exhibitions to film screenings to tours, there is plenty for people to learn about Black history and culture in the Alamo City.

With Charles Floyd conducting and Timothy Jones as bass-baritone, A Celebration of MLK for DreamWeek is a great way to start off Black History Month. Dr. Martin Luther King's life and legacy will be honoured as part of DreamWeek by the Philharmonic.

A DreamWeek for Artists and Writers in the Wild
We will meet on January 29th at 3:00 p.m.

Art in the Wild & Write in the Wild will feature San Antonio Poet Laureate Andrea Vocab Sanderson at the McNutt Sculpture Garden. Drawing, watercolor painting, or clay sculpting are some of the methods you can use. Thomas D. Mangelsen: A Life in the Wild exhibit will follow.
Alamo: A Black History Walk on the River
On February 9th from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

You can enjoy Walk in the River: A Black History of the Alamo City wherever you are! The Walk on the River documentary focuses on the Black experience in San Antonio at this virtual screening. Religious themes, education, politics, social organizations, and community involvement feature prominently.
Black Restaurant Week San Antonio
When: February 26 March 6
The participating restaurants are located throughout San Antonio
A 5-year-old celebration, Black Restaurant Week San Antonio focuses on Black-owned restaurants, food trucks, and culinary professionals throughout the city. Take part in the Tastiest Week in San Antonio and taste great food and wine! With Jamaican, Nigerian, Soul Food, BBQ, burgers, and more, there's a restaurant for every taste!

In spite of the fact that SAAACAM's wildly popular Black History River Cruise is sold out in February, the organization still has great events to celebrate. In partnership with IKEA Live Oak, SAAACAM presents the Black Resistance at the Lunch Counter exhibit on February 13th at 8:00 a.m. There is no cost for this event, but registration is required. Visitors will receive a complimentary breakfast. Additionally, SAAACAM welcomes all to the Green Book Historical Marker unveiling on February 22nd from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Immerse yourself in history as you travel around San Antonio for the unveiling of the historic markers providing context to safe places for Negro Motorists during the Jim Crow era. As with the previous event, this one is free, but registration is required.

Seeing the work of local Black artists through the lens of the exhibition Between Yesterday and Tomorrow: Perspectives from Black Contemporary Artists of San Antonio is an amazing opportunity to gain a fuller understanding of their life and work experiences. With their drawings, paintings, photographs, mixed media, digital media, assemblage, sculpture, quilting, and mixed media, 18 artists share unique perspectives on Black history and identity, family dynamics, social connections, personal human experience, and spirituality and resilience.

Archives and Museum of African American Community in San Antonio

Located inside Historic La Villita Arts Village, the San Antonio African American Community Archive & Museum, affectionately called SAAACAM (Say-Cam), is a valuable resource for African-American history. The SAAACAM is responsible for many educational events that promote the Black community in the city. Float through downtown San Antonio on the River Walk while learning about the city's Black History on a Black History River Cruise. Their Black History Film Series screens some of the most important Black-themed films for free. Several artifacts, timelines, and other items are also displayed at the museum's actual location.

An architectural design and historic preservation are combined at San Pedro Creek Culture Park. Take a trip to explore historic San Antonio and discover hidden gems like the cornerstone found during an archeological dig that dates back to 1875 at the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church.
